“ Doors are open to senior citizens belonging to any caste or creed. Those who seek to spend time, engage in activities of their interests, have the companionship of people of similar age, indulge in mental alertness activities, cultivate spiritual growth and much more are very welcome here ”

What Pakalveedu Offers is a day long fellowship to the senior citizens of Thrissur. The day is well spent with activities aimed at spiritual, social, physical and intellectual nourishment of the old people. So there are memory games, physiotherapy, songs, meditation, house fellowships, counseling to the families, lectures, messages, medical check-ups, picnics etc. They are picked up in the morning and taken back home in the evening to spend their nights in their own homes. What Pakalveedu could witness in the last few years is old people coming out of their lonliness and depression and thus less hospitalization and enhanced quality of life.

Getting old, for some, means becoming lonely. A day long fellowship can go a long way to give a silver lining to the somber tint to the twilight of their lives.

India has the largest population of the tribal (indigenous) people in the world. Tribals constitute 8.14 percent of the total population of the country, numbering 84.51 million (2011 Census). Tribal people are the poorest in the country. 52 percent of Tribal population is Below Poverty Line. Over 50 percent of the tribal villages and hamlets have no access to public transportation facilities and roads. They mostly depend on marginal farming, agricultural labor and unskilled work for their living. Sizable numbers of them are now landless laborers.

Unsafe and inadequate housing is a major problem faced by tribal people. Houses with thatched roofing, weak foundations and flooring with mud and cow dung are typical conditions of the houses, and they require frequent repairs. Open defecation is vastly prevalent due to lack of awareness on sanitation and hygiene and absence of sanitation facilities. Low level of education and high school dropout rates are very common among Tribal children.

Daya Charitable Trust implements shelter and community development interventions for tribal communities of Thrissur district since 2008 to address their shelter and community development needs.
